Ebro river Experience 

Along the 930 km journey, the river Ebro crosses different territories shapes and all types of landscapes. But when it comes to Catalonia shown in all its glory.

Since Mequinensa downstream, to the plain of the Ebro Delta, the river flow most of the Iberian Peninsula, 130 kilometers makes the final stretch of shore surrounded by woods in perfect condition and postcard villages mirrored in its waters.

The vagaries of the Ebro have caused great natural beauty and rich orchards irrigated crops full of sweet fruit, contrast with the ocher of dry land, planted with vines, almond and olive trees.

Since ancient times the waters of the Ebro were cleaved by various peoples who have made stay: Iberians, Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Saracens ... The ships, driven by the strength of the current favorable ' water and wind or aided by "sirgadors", they do know and spread over the name of Iberia and have been home to some illustrious experiences immortalized by writers such as Arthur and Bladé Desumvila Moncada and Jesus. Ebro delta Experience

The Ebro Delta, covering an area of 320 km2, the largest aquatic habitat in Catalonia and offers a rich diversity of environments. River, sea, bays, beaches, dunes, saltmarshes, riverside woodlands, coastal lagoons, fluvial islands and ullals (pools), make up its natural landscape, and, along with the rice paddies, are home to a great variety of living things (birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates and so on) adapted to the different habitats.

This biological wealth contrasts with the extensive human presence. To ensure harmony between the natural values and their exploitation by local people, and at their behest, in 1983 the Government of Catalonia declared the Ebro Delta a natural park (7,802 ha).

The importance of the delta is recognised worldwide: Bureau MAR list, Site of Community Importance for its halophyte plants, Special Protection Area (SPA) for birds, Natura 2000 site and Ramsar site (Convention on Wetlands of International Importance). Recently it has been accredited as an area under the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas and as a European destination of Excellence (EDEN).

As a wetland, the delta is a productive environment on which innumerable plant and animal species depend for their survival. The marshes develop many vital functions, such as waters storage, protection against storms, stabilisation of the coast, recycling of nutrients and pollutants, etc. It also offers economic benefits for local communities through the traditional exploitation of its natural resources: fishing, hunting, agriculture, stockbreeding, saltpans and, more recently, tourism.

The convergence of the marine and mainland environment gives rise to a large number of fish species (about 50). As for birds, over 400 species have been cited in the delta for it houses some of the most important seabird breeding colonies in the Mediterranean. A total of 764 species of flora have been cited: A large number have had to adapt to the extreme conditions and colonise dunes, hypersaline soils, areas permanently under water, etc.

The uniqueness of the delta can be seen in its geography and natural environment, and also in its local traditions, culture, architectural heritage and history.

- Guided tour of the medicianl botanical and ecological garden: With more than 350 organic spices, medicinal and culinary, the botanical garden is a space plus a walk in nature, we can gain knowledge of plants and their medicinal uses current and traditional. We also observe a great biodiversity of native tree species and shrubs, surrounded by fields. The garden puts visitors in touch with nature, ecology, health through with power plants, demonstrating the educational and cultural contact in all this.

- Costeeringe: will leave from one of the best beaches in the Delta, for a kayak tour along the coast. The best way to enjoy the scenery and do some sport. We will make a stop and with a mask and snorkel observe the seabed.
We will make one last stop at a place where we can make a jump, not dangerous from the rocks and back to the starting point.
Suitable for all ages, adapting the level to the target audience.
Over Illa visit the sea, where we stop to explain the culture of rice (sowing, harvesting, ...), then we will go to the beach of the Marquise, to see the contrast of the Mediterranean Sea with the rice fields. We will stop to discover La Barraca Typical Deltaic (typical construction of the Delta, used as housing for older people). We will continue to Deltebre, the largest population in the Delta, where we explain the system of irrigated rice fields. During this excursion we will make stops to inform the flora and fauna of the third largest Natural Park of the Mediterranean.
At about 11:00 approx. We will go to the pier, where we wait for one of the Swallows (boat) oldest river Ebro, to show one of the most beautiful journeys, the union of the river Ebro to the Mediterranean Sea.
This journey will allow us to know part of history, vegetation and usefulness of the largest river in Spain.
After the ride we will have a snack of mussels and vermouth rapitenc (typical local drink)
Return to origin.
